Not sure if he's got bad luck, or creates it. He's also burned up a Ford Ranger engine (started a small fire when we popped the hood).

I think your friend just has a tendency to kill engines.
TDi engines may have had issues with emissions, but reliabaility hasn't realy been an issue from what I have heared.
(unlike a certain version of VAGs 1.4L gasoiline engine)
