I haven't seen a pre-facelift Jetta of that generation for a while. Even the last TDI I saw had the facelift.

Interesting observation. Supposedly the ones with the ALH engine (99-03) are considered the best.

Was the DPF introduced there around 2004?

I am still learning a lot about my car but I believe so. My 2003 does not have a DPF.

I suggest the TDI forum for proper care and feeding. https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php

The TDI forum has proven to have a wealth of information on all sorts of topics. It is pretty great.

The last few days have been pretty productive. I am making progress on eliminating all the check engine lights. I have changed the oil and I am waiting on the transmission filter, which will hopefully fix P0811, which is excessive clutch slippage. I am not sure what exactly tripped that, since that code should be exclusive to manuals.

Today I should finish up replacing the thermostat and temp sensor, which should resolve P0118 and P0228. I will also be taking the intake apart for P0401 and clean the EGR valve, which should (hopefully) fix that issue; it is pretty dirty.

After all that I still have P0234 (overboost) and a code for the TPS. The car does not have a TPS as far as I am aware and I haven't noticed any related problems when I drove the car home. Input on these are welcome.

Check engine light saying things are broken that don't even exist? Sounds like normal VW features.

I think your friend just has a tendency to kill engines.
TDi engines may have had issues with emissions, but reliabaility hasn't realy been an issue from what I have heared.
(unlike a certain version of VAGs 1.4L gasoiline engine)
