I'm pretty sure I could still drive RWD in the winter. I got my licence with it on ice, and went off to blast through snow drifts. I've never needed 4WD, nor a tow. One good tip - if you have an automatic transmission, put it in neutral for skid recovery so one end is not fighting the other.
