Can't offer a reasoning other than the light might be monitored for failure: if it changes the voltage on the circuit and perhaps causes another warning light to work like the SES light on my VW which is odometer based. You probably could even use a different colored led biased backwards or a common cathode multi colored so normal is green and failure goes red and the mix would be orange.
