I think that might've originated in the early days of Honda. The master cylinder on my 75 is on the right (passenger) side even though it's LHD. There is no way the master would fit on the driver side because of how close the engine is to the firewall. Since it was originally RHD they probably just stuck with that orientation. I think the k series engines are on the 'correct' side.
