In Ontario there is no distinction made between crossbows and vertical bows, so if you can use a crossbow in bow season I'd recommend that. It was hard enough just rotating in my tree stand without spooking the doe, I think if I had to stand and draw the deer would have left. Other than that, for the average Joe they are the same, pretty much limited to 30 yard shots unless you buy a super fast shooting X-bow or bow and practice alot. You still have to practice with a crossbow but using a scope makes it a bit easier to be consistent with less practice than a normal bow. This is my 3rd year hunting at all so its taken a while for me to actually get one.
Bennelson, hopefully we will be eating far more venison in the next year too, we had the backstraps that night I shot it and a couple striploin steaks last night. Its all been very very good! Tender and still has a bit of gamey flavour which I like. We were also amazed by how much fat was on the deer, I guess its been a good summer for them!
