This, and in some countries many people either resorting to a private vehicle as a perceived "safer" measure to prevent getting the Chinese virus, and many others who look out for a new car to use as a workhorse.

If they make only high margin trims, they will be sold. No reason to waste manufacturing capacity on low margin models/trims.

In my country, there is still a balance of some more austere subcompacts and the SUVs which became an object of desire for the emerging middle-class. But maybe in order to concentrate more effort on the models with a higher margin, some lower-end ones had their cost increased substantially.
