I don't have much of an opinion on what optimal population looks like, but I do know we're going to have a depopulation crisis within my lifetime.
Having kids is a real PITA, and some folks have figured out how to not have them if they don't want them. As the world continues bending towards materialism and escapism, more people will decide not to reproduce.
