Stupid question: could the injection pump and or injectors need some cleaning? I forgot what Mercedes recommended for their 70s-80s diesels but it was something you could buy at parts store.
No so stupid question: have you checked the valves (cheapo Amazon $20 borescope camera though injector hole) to see if they have crud behind them? What about the pistons?
Does this car get to see highway trips often? Short trips and diesels are not friends
