Just a small amount of kerosene, similar to the so-called "priming" which used to be done on gasoline-powered piston-engined aircraft when radial engines outnumbered the opposed-piston engines.

Flat 4 and 6 aircraft engines get primes to start too. Since they don't have a choke system, no other way to enrich for start. Some marvel and bendix carbs have an accelerator pump you can pump to get the extra start fuel, but you don't normally slam the throttle to full on like a car. Fuel injected are particularly difficult to cold start without a prime.

1. These engines get some fuel for priming into the intake manifold, but the crankcase
2. Aircraft piston engines typicly don't run on kerosenen (jet A-1) but gasoiline (AvGas/MoGas)
3. This isn't specific to any cylinder configuration
4. With radials you have to rotate the engine at least once before starting in order to ensure you don't hydrolock it

Some former Varig mechanics told me it was a common pratice to add a small amount of gasoline to the oil before starting the radial engines of a DC-3.

The radials in a DC3 ran 50/60 wt single viscosity AD oil. It is like molasses jello at cold temperatures, the starter doesn't have enough power to spin it without the fuel thinning it. Common practice in Dehavilland Beavers in the great white north, my Alaskan pacer had this option on the flat 4.
It does not migrate into the cylinder, it vaporizes out through the crankcase vent after the engine warms

Adding gasoiline to the oil is sometimes done in very cold places to reduce its viscosity for startup and evaporate once the oil reaches operating temperature.
However it's not a common procedure here...

Stupid question: could the injection pump and or injectors need some cleaning? I forgot what Mercedes recommended for their 70s-80s diesels but it was something you could buy at parts store.
No so stupid question: have you checked the valves (cheapo Amazon $20 borescope camera though injector hole) to see if they have crud behind them? What about the pistons?
Does this car get to see highway trips often? Short trips and diesels are not friends

70s/80s diesels mostly used what is known as the "Reiheneinspritzpumpe" in german, idk the translation but these things are mainly known to last for ever even when neglected.
However adjusting it might be worth looking into.
