That would have been my point. It's hot when it first needs reloading.
I think it's instructive for the air path, in in the middle and split between the bottom of the fuel and the afterburner ring at the top. The top-down burn is suboptimal. Instructions emphasize having the whole top lit evenly before you close it up.
