Two (or more) things can be true at once. 1. The Green New Deal would be the worst humanitarian disaster the modern world has seen. 2. Conspicuous consumption (expending resources to display wealth/power/status) is needlessly wasteful.
The GND is DOA, which is fantastic news for humans living in the USA. Conspicuous consumption is still a cultural phenomenon, which society will have to gradually change. Problem is, consumption is encoded at the lowest level of our biology. I have no ideas for solutions other than to state the obvious that it must also tap into the deepest core of our biology to stand a chance of succeeding.
I toured the USS Midway Saturday, and the whole time I was extremely impressed. Everything was made of thick heavy steel. 4,000 person crew. 130 aircraft. I'd be less impressed touring a dinghy. It's easier for me to imagine the design and construction of the simpler vessel compared with the seemingly infinitely complex carrier. Complexity is interesting.
