In the 1900s Ukraine gave up their nukes, left behind by Russia and nato promised to protect them and look what happened. They are probably going to lose a third of their country.
And if they kept nukes, gotta wonder if it would have been enough of a deterrent, Russia is close enough that a nuke drop would have regional side effects

A nuke toward the nut job in the Kremlin could result in erratic behavior lashing out towards random targets as he incinerates
