I'm broadly of the opinion that there are places where nuclear isn't a great idea - like highly active fault lines, for example. Oddly, that seems to be where most of the nuclear plants are.

Beyond that, bring on the nukes I say.

The US Navy has robust designs that rock-and-roll on submarines to aircraft carriers. Design an anvil system that will meet all local as well as national requirements and pop them into old coal power plants. This is the whole idea behind small modular reactors (SMRs). They do need a higher level of enrichment but not to anywhere near weapons grade, so proliferation is still minimal. Also, you can build several types of reactors as some can fission the leftover fuel from older reactors. Those casks of "nuclear waste" are hardly that - they are fuel to other reactor types.

Then there is Thorium. That stuff is all over the place. Coal ash ponds have them in high enough concentrations to make them worth mining and cleaning up. Many of our rare earth mines that were closed decades ago have mountains of tailings containing thorium. Thorium is one of the reasons we do not mine our rare earths here in North America - the tailings are nuclear waste. We have enough tailings to power the country for 1000 years if you deem it worth cleaning up the tailings and deriving the rare earth as well as heavy metals contained therein.

I'm not totally concerned about proliferation of nuclear weapons, and honestly sometimes I wish Brazil had some too. Even if no nuclear weapon was deployed after WWII, I believe in peace through superior firepower...

MSR Thorium is 99 times more efficient than traditional fission, cannot meltdown, can use up spent nuclear waste and has much less waste materials, too bad we forgot how to make them in 1975 and only China is interested in building one. If

I fell asleep last night listening to 3hrs of "Thorium Debunk". The title is a trap to lure in those that want to discredit Thorium. Instead it highlights the many potential benefits of developing the technology.

After what happened in Ukraine no nation will ever surrender their nukes and nearly every nation that doesn't have them will be seeking them.
In the 1990s Ukraine gave up their nukes, left behind by Russia and nato promised to protect them and look what happened. They are probably going to lose a third of their country.

And if they kept nukes, gotta wonder if it would have been enough of a deterrent, Russia is close enough that a nuke drop would have regional side effects

We have the example of North Korea. One failed false flag against Hawaii and Little Rocket Man realized that possessing those missiles could be turned against him and he came to the negotiation table.
