Though I lived in Amazon when I was a kid, I didn't pay much attention to terra preta by then. Well, not every arable land is actually black, some red ones are also very fertile such as terra roxa in Paraná which is actually red instead of purple, yet as the Italian immigrants would call it rossa the settlers from other backgrounds would mistake it for purple in Portuguese...
