Pre-Columbian Brazil was the best example. a vast orchard, with patches of terra preta for the vegetable gardens. When the pandemics came the whole thing went to seed.

Had a "sustainable" handling of native timber be allowed once again, do you believe it could improve soil quality for instance. Around 7 years ago I remember seeing a sawmill advertising that it had Araucaria wood, presumably from old trees which fell due to old age since it's forbidden to cut them, yet there were times when Araucaria wood mostly from Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul used to be exported even to Europe. Araucaria is a pine, just like the European Pinus which is "farmed" nowadays, yet the European Pinus tends to acidize the soil and prevent native trees to grow on its surroundings, and some of those native trees displaced by Pinus also served as a food source for native wildlife.

Don't know, but the 'secret sauce' in terra preta is certainly interesting.

Though I lived in Amazon when I was a kid, I didn't pay much attention to terra preta by then. Well, not every arable land is actually black, some red ones are also very fertile such as terra roxa in Paraná which is actually red instead of purple, yet as the Italian immigrants would call it rossa the settlers from other backgrounds would mistake it for purple in Portuguese...

IPCC says that solar emits 6 to 7 times more CO2 than nuclear power. It's the IPCC what do they know?

https://youtu.be/0kahih8RT1k

That's why when I say solar power belongs on people's roof tops. It's a lot less CO2 and it puts power in the hands of the people.

My solar installer stopped by this afternoon. I hadn't read his email sent 2 hours prior so it was unexpected by me. He said he was going to replace a faulty DC optimizer. I hadn't paid enough attention to realize one of twenty had gone bad.

He confused my site with my dad's, so he thought it was easily accessible ground mount. Couldn't reach the faulty inverter, so he'll be back out to fix it with the right tools to safely service it.

Thanks to everyone for subsidizing my solar. My bill last year was something like $62 for the additional electricity I needed beyond production, and $144 to maintain a meter and account.

Regarding nuclear, SA mentioned today that Germany has announced a second group of nuclear generators they intend to bring back online in addition to their previous announcement. So much for big, bad, nuclear. You don't realize what you had until it's gone.

I dunno. At ?t=623 hydroelecrtric power gets saddled with the 1975 Banqiao Dam failure. 170,000 is rookie numbers for floods in China (Yellow River) and ignores other examples that took hundreds of lives. theconstructor.org/case-study/top-biggest-dam-failures/228282/
Quote:
1. St. Francis Dam
On 12 March 1928, one of the worst civil engineering disasters of the 20th century occurred with no warning. The St. Francis Dam, located 64 km northwest of Los Angeles, California, failed unexpectedly. Due to the failure of the dam, 47 million m3 of water was released into San Francis Quito Canyon. The result was devastating and over 400 people died due to the failure of the dam.

3. Vajont Dam
On 9 October 1963, Vajont Dam, located in Italy, suffered a failure of its southern rock slope over an approximate length of 2 km. The result was devastating and five villages and 2,040 lives were lost due to the failure of the dam.
Anyways, I think the roofs of people's house should be shaped to capture wind energy. Solar should be in the window panes.

I support building out new hydroelectric capacity in canada, preferably on rivers that don't cross in the US or if they do give a few hundred miles of buffer.

Germany is turning off their nuclear reactors and restarting coal fired power plants.

https://www.reuters.com/business/ene...23-2022-09-05/

(Reuters) - Germany plans to keep two of its three remaining nuclear power stations on standby, beyond a year-end deadline to ditch the fuel, to ensure enough electricity supply through the winter during a gas crunch. Until coal plants can be brought back online.
