In science, when a 'hypothesis' can be quantified mathematically, and empirically tested, if it 'passes' the test, it becomes 'theory', which can now be taught.
Einstein's hypothesis of relativity became the Theory of Relativity once atomic clocks ( one on the ground, and one in a aircraft) exhibited Einstein's time-dilation, exactly as predicted by the math.
I got dosed with 4-years of theory in my 'liberal' education at college.
