Current cost to build out various generation capacity. Wind and Solar are cheaper than Coal more expensive than Natural Gas. Coal plants are also just REALLY expensive to build. A new 650 MW coal plant is $2.65 Billion while a Combined Cycle Natural Gas plant is $500 Million. NG is cheaper and faster to build and costs about 1/2 as much to run so there is no wonder that utilities are building out NG plants instead of coal for their new fossil plants.
