Coal heating is dirt cheap if you can buy in bulk by the ton.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission...
Heat and electricity generation are different beasts. I burn hydrocarbons for heat, but my electricity comes from solar and the grid.

I vote for high efficiency heat pumps. Love mine, $100 electric bills in winter

I like mine as well. We replaced our natural gas furnace with a ductless heat pump back in 2017. That resulted in savings in our utility bills AND A/C basically for free.

Current cost to build out various generation capacity. Wind and Solar are cheaper than Coal more expensive than Natural Gas. Coal plants are also just REALLY expensive to build. A new 650 MW coal plant is $2.65 Billion while a Combined Cycle Natural Gas plant is $500 Million. NG is cheaper and faster to build and costs about 1/2 as much to run so there is no wonder that utilities are building out NG plants instead of coal for their new fossil plants.
https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/aeo/ass.../table_8.2.pdf
(Overnight cost is the cost of a construction project if no interest was incurred during construction, as if the project was completed "overnight.")

No, it's not cheaper, and those who concoct those LCOE distortions are hiding the costs.
If you make the cost of dispatchable power more expensive by relying on them for a stable grid, but underutilizing the infrastructure costs without including that in the LCOE of wind and solar, then it's simply corrupt accounting.
Show me a 100% wind and solar utility that includes storage that is less than the cost of coal, and you've got an argument.

When a car with better fuel economy comes out do you scrap your old car and buy the new one so that you can save money? No that would be stupid. Same with utilities - they aren't going to scrap their current generating plants long before they reach their end of life just because it is cheaper to build a NEW solar farm than a NEW coal plant.
There are 100% renewable grids - most of them are on islands. It wouldn't surprise me if Hawaii was the first US state with a 100% renewable grid.

How much cheaper is the natural gas plant when there's no natural gas to burn?
