'abrupt' ocean currents
We'd need specificity with respect to what they mean by 'abrupt', as in climate, this can be measured in thousands of years.
An inland continental glacial sea, breaking loose through a land barrier, could deliver such a freshwater pulse into the ocean that the thermohaline cycle could be shocked by the change in density.
We won't be seeing any glaciations though, the way things are going.
