I would drain some out as well and it is easy to do. Just loosen the oil drain plug and unscrew it by hand until oil starts flowing out slowly. When you have drained the amount you want screw the plug back in finger tight and check the oil level. Repeat as necessary and then tighten the drain plug. You should be able to do this with minimal mess although you will likely get some oil on your hand.

Just don't do this with a hot engine - engine oil can burn.

Gasoline Fume's method of draining at the oil filter works too but in all my cars that makes a mess. It really depends on how the oil filter is positioned and what is below it.
