Oil overfill.

I have a 2001 Honda Insight with a CVT transmission.I had the oil and filter changed but even after driving it 1400 miles the dip stick stllsows some overfill.Some old oil noted on back of engine.Hoe bad is overfill for this engine?

How much over full mark on the dip stick?
You taking like a quarter inch or like a full inch?

Overfill 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

Car has 186K.I recently got it running again by replacing ground cable from engine block to chassis.

I would drain some out. Maybe try draining the oil filter once or twice? These cars only take about 2.5 quarts. I run 2 quarts in mine.

I would drain some out as well and it is easy to do. Just loosen the oil drain plug and unscrew it by hand until oil starts flowing out slowly. When you have drained the amount you want screw the plug back in finger tight and check the oil level. Repeat as necessary and then tighten the drain plug. You should be able to do this with minimal mess although you will likely get some oil on your hand.

Just don't do this with a hot engine - engine oil can burn.

Gasoline Fume's method of draining at the oil filter works too but in all my cars that makes a mess. It really depends on how the oil filter is positioned and what is below it.
