You don't dismiss "alien origin" because of the octagonal shape, you dismiss it because it's a balloon; the most primitive form of flight. Also, because space is too vast, it probably doesn't matter if there are aliens. Solving space travel likely involves breaking the universal speed limit, which also implies time travel. We know there's no time travel because someone would have visited the past, introduced technology, and repeated that cycle until an infinite technological progress had been achieved. We don't have infinite technology, ergo, no time travel, ergo, no FTL travel.
