Below is the underside of a 4th Gen Prius. Notice the cat and exhaust system is basically the only thing not covered with a belly pan. That is for airflow.

Will excess heat hurt the catalytic converter itself? I honestly don't know. I do know from vehicle testing that excessive heat can fail sensors in the emission systems and cook wire insulation into brittle plastic flakes. That heat will also increase cabin temperatures by heating the floor and may not play nice with the resins used for sound deadening.

What would an ecomodder do? All kinds of things that a manufacturer that has to warranty millions of vehicles for 100K or more miles would never do.
