Once an ignition coil failure in a '01 Brazilian Chevrolet Corsa (similar to the Opel Corsa B) caused the catalytic converter to overheat in a quite scary way. As it became noticeably gutless and wasting some fuel, which would only ignite once it reached and soaked the ceramic honeycomb of the catalytic converter, my father took it to a mechanic who diagnosed the failure, quick enough I believe to prevent any serious damage which could render the catalytic converter uneffective.
