There are mostly Spanish-speaking countries surrounding Brazil, yet the largest border between Brazil and another country is with France, since the French Guyana is not an independent country. There is also the formerly British Guyana where English is the official language, and Suriname where Dutch is the official language.

Even within Brazil, accents vary a lot among different regions, yet it's mostly understandable for people from different regions, otherwise nobody would be able to understand what each other says. On a sidenote, recently Lula da Silva said he couldn't understand what a Portuguese said to him
