Kinda like how we burnt the blueprints for building nuclear power plants after the 70s. At one point we knew how to build them relatively quickly and relatively inexpensively, and then forgot all that. Apparently it was cheaper/easier to engineer them with a slide rule and pencils than using calculators and engineering software.

I'm worse than a curmudgeon, as they only complain that things were better back in their day. I say things were better before my day. How would I know?
