Stacking big rocks isn't evidence of advanced burrowing machines; it's evidence of a primitive culture expending enormous amounts of precious resources to stack big rocks.
Coincidentally, I just watched a Jarid Boosters video The Bad Lands Rock Formations, Do Castles mean Kingdoms? Petrified Remains. Badlands, SD Old Photos

In a just-asking-questions-here mode he presents the story of the Lakota Ghost-dancers claim that their ancestors built the Badlands. Actually, the story is that the 'giants in those days' built the Big Bad Lands and then invited the proto-Lakotans in, which angered $Diety, who smote them into oblivion.

It sounds like peace pipe hippies to me. The Badlands were obviously created by massive electrical discharge machinging from outer space, that lifted massive amounts of rock, a depth equal to the height of the mesas.

The formations have strata, not rooms inside.
