Most of the times I had a hard time talking with older folks, it was due to some hearing impairment they had. Yet my father-side grandpa often feared being mistaken for a "crazy old man" because he tended to repeat what had been told to him after asking people to repeat something he didn't hear so clearly. He had a stroke 5 years prior to his death BTW, and tended to whisper with a weaker voice compared to how he talked prior to that stroke. Grandma OTOH had kidney and liver diseases, and AFAIK she was resorting to a hearing aid in her last years, but she didn't have any age-related or illness-related speech impairment. Not to mention her prodigal memory...
