Living on the coast has advantages weather wise: no really hot or cold days for the majority of time. Some houses in LA didnt and still don't have heaters or A/C. Grow a food producing garden year round. Don't own a winter coat........ you do need to be high enough to avaoid winter surges of water.

200 miles north of LA, there's places where the only time you can see your neighbor is at the grocery store
