I had friends in South Park, CO (where I saw -51 °F one day when I had lived there) and they had a geo-dome on a south-facing slope with a large concrete floor sun room on the bottom that they could leave without heat for weeks at a time during mid winter and none of their plants or pipes would freeze. It was also very cheap to heat when they did heat it.
