When we visit family in Michigan we can borrow a car from either of our parents. If we fly into Flint we generally do. If we fly into Detroit we rent a car because the airport is a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive depending on traffic. It isn't right to expect our parents (who are in their late 70's) to drive 8 to 10 hours just to shuttle us back and forth to the airport.

More important than saving money - I simply don't have an extra 4 days of vacation to burn for a trip east. Vacation days are rare and precious - except for 2020 I've never had enough. If a trip requires more than 1 day driving each way - I'm flying. I can't see wasting 1/2 my vacation days in a car.

Part of the vacation and experience is the traveling! It’s my fav part. Seeing new sites and landscapes ( western us is gorgeous! So many pretty stops to make) plus all the local foods and cuisines and people. Each state has its own quirks. I’m def not getting any New Mexican hatch green Chiles here in Oregon or Tex Mex lol
