Tire Weight

When I had the ecopias tires, I got close to 90 mpg at 55 mph! Now it’s down to 60. A 30 mpg hit from a simple tire swap is brutal and doesn’t make sense to me

At 75 mph I was getting 55 plus give it take mpg

So low speed high way driving I drop from 90 to 60 mpg and then at fast interstate driving I only drop a little over 5 mpg

Might as well just drive fast since the numbers hit is so small

Can anyone explain this?
The difference in the weight of the tire can make a huge difference on economical vehicles, the ecopias are a very light tire as to where a snow tire my be at least ten pounds heavier.

Oregon to Florida? That is 6,000 miles / 6 days round trip drive at least. I'm taking it you just like to drive because after making cross-country drives I can't see how driving would be cheaper than flying unless you are sleeping in the car.

For me about 500 miles is my driving limit unless I am either in the campervan doing an extended trip or on the motorcycle. Anything farther and I'm flying there and back for a few hundred bucks. A direct 2 1/2 hour flight to Phoenix is $250 roundtrip. We were supposed to fly down last month for a fly and ride motorcycle trip last month but my mom got sick. Now we have her dog for the winter so that will limit travel until spring. $50 a night to board a dog adds up quick.
im assuming you havent looked at the prices of rental cars and must have family or friends who let you borrow their vehicles when you travel to the east coast. the cost of plane tickets and then rental cars and then the extra gas from the rental guzzlers is much more expensive than driving in an ioniq and staying in cheap motel 6s across the country. i drove to florida on 150 bucks of gas. benefits of ecomodding a hybrid lol

Wife won't let me drive to Colorado (again) with 2 children (now). I might be able to convince her if we get a 3rd. The thing is, if we leave at 6pm, we'll get in about 6pm the next day. Half the trip will be unconscious for the kids, no airline passengers will be terrorized by shrieking, and the food is cheap, plentiful, and the cabin service is very responsive. Plus, we save a ton of money. Sure, a plane can get 100 passenger miles per gallon, but a car full of 5 people can beat that.

Car rentals are now $300 a week with my corporate code. We just switched from National to Hertz about 2 months ago - National was $260 a week. In 25 years I've never paid full price for a rental car. Before I worked at a company with a good discount I just searched sites like the one below and used codes I found. I've never once been asked to prove I actually work for the company when I used a corporate discount code.

When we visit family in Michigan we can borrow a car from either of our parents. If we fly into Flint we generally do. If we fly into Detroit we rent a car because the airport is a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive depending on traffic. It isn't right to expect our parents (who are in their late 70's) to drive 8 to 10 hours just to shuttle us back and forth to the airport.

More important than saving money - I simply don't have an extra 4 days of vacation to burn for a trip east. Vacation days are rare and precious - except for 2020 I've never had enough. If a trip requires more than 1 day driving each way - I'm flying. I can't see wasting 1/2 my vacation days in a car.

Yes, the economics and environmental factors change quite a bit the more people that are making the trip.

Part of the vacation and experience is the traveling! It’s my fav part. Seeing new sites and landscapes ( western us is gorgeous! So many pretty stops to make) plus all the local foods and cuisines and people. Each state has its own quirks. I’m def not getting any New Mexican hatch green Chiles here in Oregon or Tex Mex lol

I'm retired, don't have a time constraint or dependents that are not self sufficient. If it's around a thousand miles we take the Golf. Over that we fly and use public transit or flat foot it. Hotels work out pretty much the same either way also meals. Two thousand miles driving messes with my body, aint worth futzing for a week to recover.

You do what's good for you. I can't judge. Oh wait, I can judge...........

Sure if the point of the vacation is the travel. If the point of the trip is to see family I cant see burning a week of vacation spending 6 days driving 12 hours a day and only 2 days with family.

On the other hand it was fun to fly into Vegas, rent a campervan for a week, and see the surrounding area averaging only a few hours of driving a day and spending most of the time hiking and exploring. We did that 3 years in a row over Thanksgiving to visit all the national parks within a reasonable distance from Vegas. Thanksgiving is a great time to visit parks - just us and the foreign tourists.. We dont spend less than 2 days when we visit a park and even that is only scratching the surface.

First week of December is a much better time to visit family than either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Less traffic in the airport and much cheaper tickets.
