Sure if the point of the vacation is the travel. If the point of the trip is to see family I cant see burning a week of vacation spending 6 days driving 12 hours a day and only 2 days with family.

On the other hand it was fun to fly into Vegas, rent a campervan for a week, and see the surrounding area averaging only a few hours of driving a day and spending most of the time hiking and exploring. We did that 3 years in a row over Thanksgiving to visit all the national parks within a reasonable distance from Vegas. Thanksgiving is a great time to visit parks - just us and the foreign tourists.. We dont spend less than 2 days when we visit a park and even that is only scratching the surface.

First week of December is a much better time to visit family than either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Less traffic in the airport and much cheaper tickets.
