It was more of a side point, not entirely relevant to the original post, but I'd wager a Vette that's short shifted and otherwise kept at the bare minimum RPM will deliver fairly decent economy. With such a large engine, and with engine losses going up exponentially with RPM, I'd wager it's the primary low hanging fruit, with more to gain than aero, weight or RR.
