The problem isn't engineering a 100 MPG car, it's finding the customer willing to live with the compromises required to achieve it...

Gashole suggests there was unicorn magic everyone could have had, but Big Oil suppressed it and now all our problems are attributable to them.

Then there's the inconvenient truth that transportation is 13% of US energy consumption, and only 1/3rd of fossil fuel consumption. It would be excellent to vastly improve transportation efficiency, but it's not solving anything.
