Subaru spent a bit of wind tunnel time exploring the aerodynamics of their XT's rear bumper.
In order to reduce drag, the rear fascia was 'lowered' down to where a 'slow' diffuser might have lived, wrapping completely around, and forwards, to the end of the rear wheel arches, creating a pool of dead air underneath there within its boundary, as the rocker panel extensions, and wrap-around front airdam had done.
It's quite possible that Ford has 'optimized' the rear fascia, and arbitrarily reducing its depth could actually make things worse.
