Cutting the roof off a car is a good way to loose a minimum of $10,000. Battling leaks would become your full time job.

Using a tent like normal people would also save a ton of money.

Finally, I could camp in my minivan in luxury and still get 30 MPG. When I've decided I no longer want the van, I can sell it at a minor depreciation rather than send it to the scrapyard.

Really finally, extra storage should go on a hitch mounted cargo carrier.

Actually really finally, if one must sleep in a box, there are folding or collapsing trailers like this, which has less room than my $100 10'x14' tent that sets up in 2 minutes.
