Aside from considering the boat tail / trailer tail / boxed cavity in the back, have you considered the managing the airflow underneath? From what I recall seeing on these Sprinters, the underbody tends to be a bit unruly. That unruliness tends to offer a lot of attachment points (e.g. the cross members). Addressing the underbody air flow could give some improvement while also having no impact on loading/unloading.

It probably wouldn't give as much benefit as a good tail, though a combination of underbody management and tail should be better than a tail alone.
