You can get plans from somewhere to build an F1 or IRL frame/suspension from everyday components, I just can't remember where I found it.
The plans were like $100, and all materials were like $500 total... then actually building the thing, welding, etc. Estimated cost, w/o drivetrain was like $5000.
It could be adapted to use just about any engine/transmission/rear end you could think of, as long as it wasn't longitudinally mounted (for whatever reason, they specifically noted this.)
Obviously, you'd never get it licensed as a formula or F1 or IRL car, but you could easily get it street legal in most states.
