The MPGuino monitors fuel injector activity. It doesn't know/care whether the vehicle is in leanburn; it just reports how much fuel is used at speed and fuel consumption is calculated from there.
I've seen it working in Ben's lean burn-equipped, VX-engined CRX.
As for making just a lean burn indicator, talk to TomO - he's made a circuit for his VX. Not sure if it's 100% compatible with the Insight, but worth an ask.
