You can do it that way, it shows that way too. That is how I currently have mine.

The main reason I am changing mine is to get it lower, increase the effect of gravity making the coolant flow into it. I just don't feel mine is low enough. The only way I can get it lower without a big mess of hoses is with the "t" I mentioned. That and I am super picky on installs, I tend to overthink them all the time.
