Hmmm, sounds like alot like Subaru's frameless windows on the doors... I don't know what the original thinking was, save weight? more glass area?
Anyways it was a way to have wind noise and leak water in... Which everyone notices alot more than a 10lb lighter car or 12 sq. inches of glass...
My old Neon has frameless windows, I love them!!! The second gen of Neon is missing these marvels of engineering....

It would not be fun to put on your spare and have it fail 20 miles later after being cooked for the last 4 years under the hood...

I guess someone has to try something different once in a while, sometimes it might pan out.
