The ZX2 trans is a solid unit, pretty durable. Unfortunatly, if no one ever changed the fluid before you, then it don't matter how solid it is.
I was wondering, from your description of how it was shifting, if you weren't expiriencing some trans problems. If it's any encouragement at all, I got my trans out of a U-pull it yard for $65, only 44k miles on it. It was quite a find, and I got it about 6 months before mine finally went out. Not every U-pull it is that cheap and you must be blessed by God to find a low mile car. It took me 6hr's by myself to pull the trans and 12hr's on my patio to replace it, again by myself. These cars are easy to work on. Of course I've been working on cars for quite some time, so easy is relative to your expirience level. You should be able to find a trans from a junk yard for around $200 if they pull it for you. Less than $100 if you do it yourself. I wouldn't suggest you try to put it in yourself unless you got someone who's done it to help you out.
Anyhow, change the fluid and be ready....you never know, it just might work out?
