My drive is not quite as rural as yours but nevertheless on my late-night commute I tend to see a dozen deer a night, mostly in the surrounding fields but occasionally traipsing into the road. My response to the added danger of large animals in the road has been to add light output, all the better to see the deeries before they try to make deerburger of themselves on the front of my car.
Which reminds me, nothing in the first post accounts for animals running into your car (as opposed to your car running into animals). I had a deer come charging out of the woods and into my car about 6 weeks ago; there was absolutely nothing I could do defensively from a driving standpoint. Perhaps the deer are becoming militant...
