Beware of the car-eating stealth cows ahead.

No, but they do come naturally equipped with visual spectrum absorbent night-camoflage suits.

My drive is not quite as rural as yours but nevertheless on my late-night commute I tend to see a dozen deer a night, mostly in the surrounding fields but occasionally traipsing into the road. My response to the added danger of large animals in the road has been to add light output, all the better to see the deeries before they try to make deerburger of themselves on the front of my car.

Which reminds me, nothing in the first post accounts for animals running into your car (as opposed to your car running into animals). I had a deer come charging out of the woods and into my car about 6 weeks ago; there was absolutely nothing I could do defensively from a driving standpoint. Perhaps the deer are becoming militant...

About six weeks ago could be either hunting season or fall rut. Was it a buck? Maybe it was just running h*** bent for the scent of the doe coming from the other side of the road?

Yep, it was a buck and it was just before hunting season started, so the deer were running. It probably was just doe-crazy, but saying it charged my car makes for a much better sounding story.

( Or he could have been running away from someone that was trying to kill him. )

How many people on this forum that are worried about hitting deer / dogs / mad housewives use 'deer whissles on their car ?

Just a thought.

Basjoos : What about going electric ?
That would be the greenest thing you could do to the car.
I realize that you have a horribly long commute to work, but it would be very possible to get that kind of range and then plug in once you arrived at work.
I'm not sure how long it takes to charge back up though.

Mad housewife whistles don't work either.

If the deer was running away from someone trying to kill it, I am terribly sorry that the person did not succeed a bit sooner.
