Temperature: there's the big contributor to mpg variations. Unless you can keep that constant, or do a back-to-back controlled test, any changes from the oil will disappear in the statistical noise.

I use Mobil 1, because carefully controlled studies have shown synthetic to be better for mileage. It's also better for the engine. But the difference is small.
