I had considered switching to this stuff once the cold weathers gone.

Around here the only FE mobile one I can find is 0W-20 or 0W-30. Are you using those same weights with the standard synth when you switch back to that?

Has the outside temperature gone up considerably since the new oil? It has here in the last few days, no more -20F weather. Ive noticed a few mpg increase both to work and back, as well as downstate.

I would just want to make sure that all things are near equal first. Since I too would not normally think that oil alone would make that much of a difference.

i am using the 0w-30. and the weather here is always fluctuating. one day it would be below zero, next day in the high fifty's then the day after that in the high sixty's. then back down to freezing.

Temperature: there's the big contributor to mpg variations. Unless you can keep that constant, or do a back-to-back controlled test, any changes from the oil will disappear in the statistical noise.

I use Mobil 1, because carefully controlled studies have shown synthetic to be better for mileage. It's also better for the engine. But the difference is small.

ive always used it because i know its better for the engine. if my corvette used it from the factory, then its the right choice for new motors that occasionally get driven hard.

i see it as this, if GM engineers chose to put it in their cars (not all of course) off the line, then its a good choice to use for how i drive my cars.
im trying to change my driving habits for better milage of course.

Is it actually true that gm put mobil 1 in some cars from the factory? I have read this about my car as well. If it is then were the motors broken in prior to them being installed in the car?

I have always thought that during break in you should use conventional motor oil so that you make sure that the rings set and various other reasons. But if GM puts mobil 1 synthetic into brand new motors then what I dont understand is what the deal is with breakin on conventional.

I know that GM recommends certain oils for different engines but I find it hard to believe that they would want the engine broken in on a synthetic.

Guess I jinxed myself. Woke up to -25F this morning. Took 10 miles for the mpguino display to fully show up.

I have always understood that conventional oil should be used for break-in too, and changed soon.

But as far as what GM recommends for normal use, I wouldn't necessarily consider that to be the best. They want you to use something that is going to get you just past the warranty period.

im not quite sure what they used for the break-in period. ive always wondered that. but i know my LT1 in my C4 had mobile one from the start, caddi N*'s use mobile one from the start, and so do the LSx engines. as im sure with a few others.

on my re-man motor i had in my blazer, i used conventional oil for the first 3000 miles, then mobile one after that. did the same with my aveo. first 3000 conventional oil, and after that its been all mobile one. never had any oil leaks or other mechanical related problems.

On some GMs I've seen Mobil1 oil filler caps - may have been an option or add on.

thats probably the recommended oil for that engine. i know my C4 had a Mobile! badge under the hood. i think my oil cap even had it written on it.
