The primary issue is damage to the other guy, if you get in a collision and are at fault. unless your car is very new a insurance claim will not get you much, because the will only give you fair market value.
If you don't have collision, and your at fault, you won't get anything.
I'd just stick to it's a stock model. anything else and the agents don't have a clue, so they charge more. Go figure.
Don't lie, but don't give them any more information than you absolutely have to. They won't know what to do with it, so they will just charge you more. Any mods you make are temporary trials, anyway. Your not going into production.
