S10 Lost all forward gears!

I went to go to the store this afternoon in my 95 Chevy S-10 with 2.2l 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission.

I backed out of my driveway, and then put it in first to pull forward.

The engine died. I restarted and tried pulling forward again. Killed the engine again.

What the heck! I couldn't go forward! It was as though the transmission simply wouldn't spin forward. I tried again in second gear, slipping the clutch more and reving the engine higher! Still couldn't go forward at all!

I was still able to use reverse. I went all around the block backwards to pull back into my driveway.

I parked the truck, turned off the engine, and popped the hood. Nothing weird that I could see.

I started the truck again and forward worked fine! What the heck!

What's going on here? The only thing I could think of was that there was lots of ice and slush under the truck from the day before, but why would that effect anything?

I really hope this doesn't happen again, but I need to figure out why it happened, so I can fix it!
